Spar Star MMA is known throughout the Southern Californian region for there amazing amateur showcases. Once again some of the best young mixed martial artists entered the cage. Some dreams were realized, while others were derailed.

Promoter Tony Padilla and his team started with a small snow ball, which has now tripled in size and moves of its own accord. The momentum this promotion has created is fueling a buzz that was making waves across the country. For the first time the event was streamed live online for free, and people were watching live, across the country. Padilla and his team cut their own path, and for fighters that path serves as directions to the ‘big show’.

Fight Card:

Craig Plaskett fighting out of Hayastan MMA, moved his amateur record to 2-0, when he was able finish a very tough Steven Ayala who was making his debut. Plaskett utilized his superior striking to secure the TKO in the 2nd round of the fight.

Lance Lee, Plaskett’s Hayastan MMA teammate also won his fight via split decision over Jose Granillo. Granillo who fighting out of Kings MMA, came up short in a very close split decision.

Sergio Perez completed the perfect evening for Hayastan, when he was able to defeat Jonathan Quiroz.

The highlight of the evening was also the most pleasant surprise. Super Heavyweights Hernan Sebastiani and Edward Rodriguez shook up the entire casino with their incredible brawl. Both fighters showed tremendous heart, and surprising technique. Sebastiani even throwing some nice head kicks. Which is not easy especially when you weigh nearly 400 lbs! In the end, Sebastiani was able to secure the win in a fight that had the entire crowd standing in approval.

In the main event ‘Dog Pound MMA’s’ Jose Lopez remained perfect as an amateur after cruising past an overwhelmed Santiago Diaz.

Spar Star MMA once again took over the Hollywood Park Casino with not only a collection of amazing fights, but SoCal’s favorite son DUB C of the West Side Connection took over at intermission, and the place exploded! Locals saluted with their hands, and the performers responded in kind, as the intimate setting proved to be a unique fusion of entertainment that complimented each other well.

The fights were also extremely entertaining. The main event featured two highly skilled amateurs who are both making names for themselves as top MMA prospects. Tigran Martirosyan and Albert Morales squared off for the vacant 145 lbs Spar Star Title.

Morales and his teammates were all working with heavy hearts as their teammate Dee Boites was killed earlier in the week, the victim of a senseless criminal. Boites was crossing the street in Inglewood, when a criminal who was being pursued by the police, barreled through a red light and struck Boites with his car in the crosswalk. Boites later succumbed to his injuries. Morales fought with “Dee” written all over his equipment, as a tribute to his fallen training partner.

The fight was a back and forth battle with both landing heavy strikes, however the story was Morales’s grappling. Martirosyan was unable to counter the slick transitions by Morales on the ground. Once Morales exposed this weakness, he seemed to focus on bringing the fight to the mat. After several attempts at a submission with the arm, Morals was able to transition to the triangle. After a roll he ended up keeping it in the mount, where he secured the head, and the tap! The win brings Morales to 2-0 as an amteur, but the caliber of his opponent will certainly elevate him in the Camo ranks.

Spar Star Promotions provides a necessary element in MMA. They provide a stage for young fighters to test their metal. Spar Star separates the wheat from the chaff, the confident from the bragard, and the fighters from the frauds. They provide the pro ranks with a talent pool to choose from that has been battle tested, and crowd approved.

To Read more about Dee Boites please go to this site: http://www.systemstrainingcenter.com/systems-training-centers-loss-brother/

There is a link on that page to make donations to the Boites Family.

We would like to send our thoughts and prayers to the friends and family of Dee Boites, and all of his training partners at Systems Training Center!

Mixed Martial Arts is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. The popularity of the UFC has crept into the mainstream, and given birth to a whole new generation of fighters that cut their teeth on the local scene. For these fighters, the ‘steel sharpens steel’ mentality has created the need for amateur competitions to showcase and test the skills learned.

These “local” shows have the look and feel of the old school smokers, however with CAMO watching closely, the fights and fighters are regulated and safety is always the number one concern.

Spar Star MMA has been consistently putting on amazing fights at the amateur level, and for this event they teamed with Tapout LA Gym to exhibit some of the best young fighters in the area. This night continued that trend. With promoters like Tony Padilla (T Bone Steakz), and gyms like Tapout, the amateur MMA scene  in Southern California has a bright future!

Below is a photo gallery of some of the evenings fights. In between each fight were several ’round robin’ jujitsu exhibitions that gave several young athletes the opportunity to highlight their individual art.

The golden road to the UFC: lost somewhere between the beginning, and a snowballs chance in hell. Amateur MMA events are often times when dreams run face first into reality. After all even the top amateurs have at best a ‘punchers chance’ to crack into the UFC ranks. Still the effort, the passion, and unfortunately the anguish of defeat is just as potent as it is on the grandest of stages.

And unfortunately for these fighters, once the claps have quieted, and the eyes of the audience glance away; these fighters are left with only a continued dream, or a lesson learned. Amateur fighters don’t receive any financial compensation.

Spar Star MMA provides an environment for these fighters to test their training, and ultimately themselves. Each one of these combat cadets spend so much time training, and preparing for the future, that the present is often left in limbo. Most exhibit a sort of feigned confidence, that the first few seconds of the fight have a way of exposing for being either myth or reality.

In most cases, panic usually eases slowly into a chaotic search for the basics. Once the initial rush of the ‘fight or flight’ instinct passes, the instructional pleas from coaches usually reminding the fighters to breathe or relax follow.

Mixed martial arts is a pretty fair and rewarding venue in the cruel sport of life. For fighters the equation is a simple cliche, ‘what you put in, is what you get out!’ Even at the amateur level the fights are won weeks ahead of time. Even at the amateur level the winners are simply willing to do, what the losers is not!
