The Hollywood Park Casino has always been friendly to the combat sports. Since openings its doors in 1994 beneath the shadow of its big brother the world famous horse racing facility of the same name, the Hollywood Park has been in the fight business. Of the many who hosted events at the Hollywood Park, two promotions had the credentials to call the place home.

One of those promotions Spar Star MMA will be hosting their last ever event at the Hollywood Park. Since 2012, Spar Star MMA has hosted an astonishing 21 events within the doors of the casino, offering countless fighters the opportunity to showcase their skills. Many of those fighters have moved on to the big shows like Bellator MMA and the UFC.

Saying goodbye to the Hollywood Park will be certainly bring a nostalgic malaise, however Spar Star MMA memories will continue to keep you warm and fuzzy on the inside. Some great fights, some incredible knockouts, and who can forget the time Dub-C and the fellas tore the roof off the building?

Saturday will truly be a bittersweet day. The end of an era. Places like the Hollywood Park Casino have always been a refuge for the emerging fighters. They offered a haven for promotions to build the fighters, creating a consistent environment for grass roots campaigns to become professional endeavors. Places like these are certainly an endangered species.

Spar Star of course will continue. Although the goodbye is bittersweet the truth is they had somewhat out grown the venue.

Make sure you head out to the show early, the event will certainly sell out. Click here: For Tickets.  The event will also be streaming live courtesy of our friends at The Global Combat Network

The champions list(Spar Star Champions Crowned at The Hollywood Park Casino): Bellator MMA veteran Albert Morales, Farren Romero, Oneida Diaz, Paola Ramirez, Andre Nickerson, Bellator MMA veteran Marcos Bonilla, Matthew Spencer, Leo Imai, Jose Lopez, Jose Diaz, Daniel Rodriguez, Joseph Williams, Keith Carson, and Benji Gomez.

Saturday November 29th brings everyone a unique opportunity to witness MMA history. Months ago candidates for a women’s bantamweight tournament were selected to square off in an attempt to crown the first ever Spar Star MMA champion. That title would be the first of its kind under the CAMO sanctioning body.

Last month the four semi finalists were set to earn their spots, however a last minute withdrawal left Danielle Mack without a fight. Since she was ready to go, and on weight, Mack received a first round bye. Her opponent in the finals Farren Romero had to earn her spot in the traditional way. Romero choked out her opening round opponent in the second round of their fight, punching her ticket to meet Mack in the finals.

With Hollywood Park Casino as the backdrop, once again the Spar Star Cage is in place and ready to absorb all the punishment the fighters can dish out. Many of these men and women will be using this platform as launching points for their burgeoning pro careers. So we can expect a high level of output from some very eager brawlers. Several of the fighters on the card have fought here before, a testament to both the quality of the show, and the character of those who run the operation.

The Nights first fight is scheduled to begin at 6:00 pm, with doors opening an hour earlier at 5:00 pm. As always this event is for all ages. Beverages and snacks will be available for purchase. A few tickets may still be available so make sure to contact any of the fighters on the card for tickets.

Leo Imai took on a tough Alejandro Flores and dispatched him in rather quick fashion. Imai quickly becoming a name to remember in the Southern California amateur ranks. Imai now 2-0 under the CAMO umbrella and his stock is rising rapidly. Imai has looked impressive in both of his wins, and fighting out of the up and coming team at Robot Fight and Fitness, the sky’s the limit for this young fighter.

Make sure you look for him fighting under the Spar Star Banner in the near future!

Mixed Martial Arts is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. The popularity of the UFC has crept into the mainstream, and given birth to a whole new generation of fighters that cut their teeth on the local scene. For these fighters, the ‘steel sharpens steel’ mentality has created the need for amateur competitions to showcase and test the skills learned.

These “local” shows have the look and feel of the old school smokers, however with CAMO watching closely, the fights and fighters are regulated and safety is always the number one concern.

Spar Star MMA has been consistently putting on amazing fights at the amateur level, and for this event they teamed with Tapout LA Gym to exhibit some of the best young fighters in the area. This night continued that trend. With promoters like Tony Padilla (T Bone Steakz), and gyms like Tapout, the amateur MMA scene  in Southern California has a bright future!

Below is a photo gallery of some of the evenings fights. In between each fight were several ’round robin’ jujitsu exhibitions that gave several young athletes the opportunity to highlight their individual art.

Spar Star MMA recently had a hotly contested title fight between Marcel Cyprian and Tanner Chapman that ended in a draw.
Judge for yourself, all three rounds are shown below.

The golden road to the UFC: lost somewhere between the beginning, and a snowballs chance in hell. Amateur MMA events are often times when dreams run face first into reality. After all even the top amateurs have at best a ‘punchers chance’ to crack into the UFC ranks. Still the effort, the passion, and unfortunately the anguish of defeat is just as potent as it is on the grandest of stages.

And unfortunately for these fighters, once the claps have quieted, and the eyes of the audience glance away; these fighters are left with only a continued dream, or a lesson learned. Amateur fighters don’t receive any financial compensation.

Spar Star MMA provides an environment for these fighters to test their training, and ultimately themselves. Each one of these combat cadets spend so much time training, and preparing for the future, that the present is often left in limbo. Most exhibit a sort of feigned confidence, that the first few seconds of the fight have a way of exposing for being either myth or reality.

In most cases, panic usually eases slowly into a chaotic search for the basics. Once the initial rush of the ‘fight or flight’ instinct passes, the instructional pleas from coaches usually reminding the fighters to breathe or relax follow.

Mixed martial arts is a pretty fair and rewarding venue in the cruel sport of life. For fighters the equation is a simple cliche, ‘what you put in, is what you get out!’ Even at the amateur level the fights are won weeks ahead of time. Even at the amateur level the winners are simply willing to do, what the losers is not!
