Bellator 131-33

Weight can be a finicky burden. Sometimes you don’t realize how heavy something is until you let it go. For the better part of 15 years Tito Ortiz carried a good portion of the load. Weather his former employers are willing to admit that or not, weather his detractors are willing to admit that or not, it is undeniable he was one if not the, torch bearer for a long time.

However that weight started to take its toll. Years of fighting injured, and ‘answering the call’ to duty had left the former Champion adrift in the rankings, injured and without any real love from the house he helped build. So he left. And it appeared the sun was setting on a former UFC Champion and UFC Hall of Famer. However, Tito Ortiz just didn’t feel ready to call it a career yet. And once again, the sun began to peek above the horizon.

So, he signed with Bellator MMA and after an initial fight with Rampage Jackson fizzled out due to an Ortiz neck injury, it seemed Tito would ride out the rest of his days in quasi relevancy appearing from time-to-time. However then they announced his first fight.

Ortiz debuted against former 185 lbs champion Alexander Shlemenko (51-9 MMA) and quickly dispatched him with a head and arm choke. Although the much larger man, Ortiz looked the part putting the smaller striker to sleep before digging his grave in the center of the cage, in classic Ortiz fashion.

Then he went on to systematically beat the tar out of an aging Stephan Bonnar (15-9 MMA). Again although Ortiz’s opponent didn’t look up too snuff, Ortiz certainly did. His wrestling looked as explosive as ever, and his gas tank never emptied. That win, although not against a top contender, led him to this title shot against current champion Liam McGeary (10-0 MMA). In McGeary, Ortiz not only faces the Champion but his toughest test since switching companies.

The champion McGeary on paper presents a ton of challenges, mainly his freakish reach. Ortiz not know for his boxing will somehow have to find a way inside in order to impose his will. If he ends up going backwards, or flailing for a takedown it could be long night, (or a short one) for Ortiz. However if Ortiz can bring the fight into his own neighborhood he certainly has the power and ability to end the fight himself. the one outcome that is assured is greatness! Greatness is bound to happen, either McGeary becomes bonafide, or Ortiz shocks the world, how can you not watch?

Win or loose Ortiz has already said his fighting career will continue, and from the way he has looked in the cage and in training who can argue? His performance against McGeary may steer some opinions one way or the other, but one thing seems certain, the sun may have set on the Huntington Beach Bad Boy, but its only rising for the ‘Peoples Champion’.

Tito Ortiz took a second to talk with Aaron Tru from The Brutally Honest Radio Show about his upcoming fight, his journey for another world title, and about cementing his name in history. Plus his lovely girlfriend Amber Nicole also has a few things to say about how the ‘People’s Champion’ prepares. Check out the video below:

Nick Diaz is one of the most polarizing figures in mixed martial arts today. Those who love him do so with a blind devotion, with a fervent loyalty that defies even logic at times. Crazy posts on social medias, his fans will stop at nothing to see him back in the cage. Those who don’t like, well they can’t wait to watch him fight either. Every hopeful to witness him catch a beating. Unfortunately both will have to wait a long time for satisfaction and one clown-shoes of a commission is to blame.

On Monday morning the Nevada Athletic Commision (NSAC) met to discuss an anomaly in one of the 3 drug tests performed on Diaz for his catch weight fight against Anderson Silva (who himself was suspended 1 year for his first positive drug test, his for PED’s) on January 31 of this year. The three tests were all performed the same day at there different times. The test results are as follows:

FACTS:

At 7:12 Diaz was tested and was within the legal limit with a marijuna metabolite reading of 48.73 ng/ml. At 10:38 he was tested again and his test came back an eye opening 733.23 ng/ml, well above the range! However a third test one conducted a little over an hour later (11:55 pm) came back again within the legal range at 61.04 ng/ml.

So is it conceivable that Diaz was within the limits for the first test, and somehow slipped away into a back room to torch a quick bone? Yes of course it is! However, the third test result would have also came back positive. Could he have cheated the first and the third to hide the second? Perhaps but Jack Ruby is dead and Kennedy was shot by Oswald, everything else is conjecture.

It is also possible, as argued by the Diaz team of experts that during warm-ups a dehydration could have triggered a elevated reading. However the reading of 733.23 NG/ml alone should have been the issue. The number is astronomical, and nowhere near in line with the other two tests. Several things could have happened, but only only a false positive would explain the third test. Had Diaz ingested marijuana, odds are it would have showed in the strict WADA test conducted at 11:55, which it did not!

The Commision did not budge. Instead of analyzing the three drug tests independently, they chose the anomaly. That in itself, is not a bad thing if you can prove the other two drug tests were less valid. But they were not. The two drug tests the NSAC decided to ignore were following the WADA guidelines ( the strictest guidelines in sports, the same guideline the court admitted later to wanting to adopt in the future!), however this time they were pushed to the side for a lab whose chain of custody procedures has been described as what they use for the ‘department of transportation’. (Interesting sidenote: That is a very easy drug test to cheat!)

Also, the Diaz’s legal team pointed out several problems with the collections methods with the test in question. Procedures that were not followed, signatures that were not made. The commission ignored these findings, and instead of examining evidence they seemed to use these findings as reasons to add more years to the impending sentence. The more he defended himself, the worse the punishment became. The commission could have easily corrected their own obvious errors, but instead decided to stick to their own witless guns.

Here is the odd thing, Commissioner Pat Lundvall a lawyer by trade, has certainly on countless times cited the constitution of the United States to achieve her own gains in civil hearings, however she lambasted Nick Diaz for retaining council and listening to his attorneys advice about not incriminating himself, essentially evoking his constitutional right. It may have been a civil hearing but Nick Diaz was fighting for his professional life in a hostile environment. How dare a commissioner, an officer of the court question and bash an American citizen for invoking his right. Who the hell does Pat Lundvall think she is? Better yet, who do the three cuckolds sitting next her think they are? They sat there emasculated, powerless watching as this woman made there commission look like the Rocky and Sack-less Bullwinkle show, only with Sarah Palin at the helm. Especially when this man passed 2 of the three tests in questions, the only two that should actually matter!

The good thing about the whole issue is it will be overturned and Nick Diaz will fight again, my best guess is before the end of 2016. This kind of hypocrisy has a way of eliminating itself rather quickly in this country. So I look forward to the day where we no longer see Pat Lundvall on the commission, which by the way will coincide with the Stockton natives’ reinstatement. You just can’t abuse power like that without repercussions. Her law firm is already getting tired of fielding pro Nick Diaz phone calls if not I’m sure they will be. Soon the world will know what I already do. This woman is not worth any effort at all. She had an opportunity to be a fair and balanced judge, and she blew it. Instead we were treated to her best Judge Judy impersonation, the only problem is Judge Judy doesn’t ignore evidence!

Check Out The Brutally Honest Take on the Topic Here. Plus Guest Adult Film Star Jesse Jane, and Interviews with Phil Davis and Tito Ortiz:

Intersting sidenote: Rousimar Palhares postponed his hearing again. I am interested to hear the commision take on his case. Drug tests are to protect athletes, This man has tried to injure atheletes on multiple occasions. I wonder if the potential is worse than the actual when it comes to punishment! Diaz got 5 years… I bet Palhares gets less!

Both are Spar Star MMA fan favorites fighting out of local camps; Imai out of Robot Fight and Fitness in Santa Monica, while Puga is a student of the late-great Joe Camacho and Mihai Valeriu at MMAFC. Both Spar Star MMA and CFL have a long history of putting together competitive fight cards that have produced some of the states finest young talent in recent years. Websters defines the term Juggernaut as: a massive inexorable force, campaign, movement, or object that crushes whatever is in its path. Perhaps that term is best when trying to understand what Orlando Sanchez accomplished at the 2015 ADCC Championships this year.

Sanchez, an underdog on most radar screens captured the 99kg championship and en route defeated perennial podium denizens Dean Lister, and Vinny Magalhaes. A huge upset in the minds of most, however Sanchez entered the tournament with a quiet confidence knowing in the end it would be his arm raised above everyone else.

Now riding the wave of his Abu Dhabi Combat Classic victory, Sanchez is primed to get his feet inside the UFC cage. There he can take his place in the Heavyweight division alongside his friend and teammate current UFC World Heavyweight Champion Fabricio Werdum. Sanchez is just the latest animal released from the beast factory that is Kings MMA.

Orlando called in to the Brutally Honest Radio show to discuss his huge win at the ADCC, and to talk about whats next in his combat career. Make sure you listen in to hear his inspirational message, and how he became a champion in sports only after becoming one in life!

A long time ago, in a galaxy far away…actually it was San Luis Obispo… a young fighter living with Chuck Liddell and Antonio Banuelos was in search of a nickname. Fighting at a weight class that didn’t even exist yet, Ian McCall began his journey in Mixed Martial Arts at the tender age of 18, amongst giants with monikers like ‘The Iceman’ and ‘The Huntington Beach Bad Boy’.  Then one late night, while chasing around a friends son in an attempt to tire him out. A slip of the tongue from a child created one of the greatest nick names in the history of our sport. Randomly from the mouth of a babe, ‘Uncle Creepy’ was born.

Since then Ian McCall (13-5 MMA) has embarked on a life journey that has been a ‘creepy’ roller coaster ride of highs and lows, both emotionally and chemically. All the while, McCall has been able to maintain his status as one of the top 125lbs fighters on the planet. From his legendary thread on The UG, to his epic brawls with Demetrious Johnson; Ian McCall has always been a fan favorite.

“Everyone knows Im the lovable, degenerate, savior who can’t seem to get his shit together!” McCall said. “However, things changed, I had a kid and I can’t do those things anymore!” McCall said. Now the father of a young daughter, McCall seems to be adjusting well to the responsibility. However the troubles continued, almost like some sort of curse. Injuries mounted, multiple procedures were needed and then the bottom fell out. McCall and the rest of his Team Oyama family were devastated by the sudden death of friend and teammate Shane Del Rosario.  Having buried my best friend, I can attest to the affect it has, life in itself becomes difficult however life continues and so to does the career of ‘Uncle Creepy’

Now 5 weeks out of shoulder surgery McCall may not be ready for a fight but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have something to say.  After this weekends 125 lbs Title Fight, McCall was a guest on the Brutally Honest Radio Show where he talked about his life, his career, and more importantly when we can expect his return! Check out the interview to hear about his Legendary thread on the UG, the philosophy he used for picking up girls, why American MMA fans are ‘pretty fucking stupid’, and how he is the savior for the 125 lbs division!

Since winning season 22 of ‘The Ultimate Fighter’, Tony Ferguson has quietly been reeking havoc on the 155 lbs division. Much like the folklore that surrounds his nickname, ‘El Cucuy’ has remained mostly in the shadows while amassing a rather impressive record(19-3 MMA, 10-1 UFC). Ferguson a winner of 6 straight has achieved all he can in the shadows, now its time for this soft-spoken boogeyman to step into the light, where his carnage can be witnessed and revered by the masses.

With the spotlight comes greater competition, and Ferguson’s next opponent is without a doubt his toughest yet, Khabib Nurmagomedov (22-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) has long been anointed the next king of the 155 lbs division, and already possesses a win over current champion Rafael Dos Anjos. That fight which took place over a year ago was the last for ‘The Eagle’ who has subsequently had to pull out of consecutive bouts with lightweight contender Donald Cerrone because of knee injuries. Now fully heeled, Khabib is welcomed back by a man who has quietly and swiftly inserted himself into the mix.

For Ferguson, the promotional push isn’t important winning is, he understands very well as long as he keeps winning the spoiled are bound to arrive. “In due time it will come around!” Ferguson said in regards to recognition. “Everybody knows me in the fight world, they don’t want to fight me!” Ferguson said with a laugh. And although the big fight will bring new exposure the new recognition isn’t something that fazes Ferguson, “What ever publicity they want to bring with it, Im down for it!” Ferguson said.

The fight itself doesn’t need any hype (although I’m sure they still will). The matchup on its own merits makes the fight one of, if not the most exciting bout currently on the schedule. On paper you have two superior grapplers with excellent wrestling pedigrees. In one corner you have Nurmagomedov, who brings a traditional smothering style of wrestling that is designed to break opponents over time, essentially by removing there soul! In the other corner you have Ferguson who utilizes excellent foot movement to dictate distance, and works extremely well behind his jab.

Although they are both excellent wrestlers, the styles are completely different. Quite often when you have two wrestlers in the cage, you end up seeing a boxing match! However, Ferguson sees conditioning as being the key to the fight. “Conditioning is something I already know is going to be tested, he is a big guy I hope he makes weight, but either way I’ll be ready.” Ferguson said. “Im always moving, and he’s just my next step towards victory!”

To follow Tony Ferguson on social media you can check him out on Instgram or Twitter
