“Isolated, with no before or after, But a lifetime burning in every moment…” Thomas Stearns Elliot

Last night lightning struck, the moons lined up and everything went according to plan for Albert Morales now (6-0). After losing an earlier scheduled opponent ‘The Warrior’ needed an opponent. Fights fall off, its just part of the game. However the only fighter willing to accept the bout on short notice was a much more seasoned opponent. Mario Israel came into the bout with a (10-1), a world of experience and he was also on a short list of fighters UFC President Dana White and UFC Matchmaker Sean Shelby were there to witness.

It took Albert Morales 20 seconds to spoil there plans. It took Albert Morales 20 seconds to silence his doubters. It took Albert Morales 20 seconds to secure his place in the UFC! However, the moment was years in the making. Morales has been steadily improving as a fighter. From his days as Spar Star MMA champion, to his pro debut and win under the Bellator MMA banner, Morales continues to rise to every challenge put in front of him. Now his greatest challenge ahead.

Now a part of the UFC roster, Morales will certainly face his toughest test yet. Getting to the UFC is like graduating high school, the big fish leaves the little pond, for the big sea but quickly they realize they are swimming among sharks!

Weather or not Morales continues to find the same success at the next level will as always depend solely on his effort. The path before him has been blazed and continues to be by great men and women. The formula is not a secret. Hard work, and effort will define or its absence will sink any ship that floats in the UFC sea. As talented as Morales is, he cannot rely on that alone. Every horse that runs in the UFC is a thoroughbred. Only time will tell if ‘The Warrior’ is ready for the stakes, but if last night is any indication, it is obvious ‘The Warrior’ is capable of burning a lifetime in any moment.

The Hollywood Park Casino has always been friendly to the combat sports. Since openings its doors in 1994 beneath the shadow of its big brother the world famous horse racing facility of the same name, the Hollywood Park has been in the fight business. Of the many who hosted events at the Hollywood Park, two promotions had the credentials to call the place home.

One of those promotions Spar Star MMA will be hosting their last ever event at the Hollywood Park. Since 2012, Spar Star MMA has hosted an astonishing 21 events within the doors of the casino, offering countless fighters the opportunity to showcase their skills. Many of those fighters have moved on to the big shows like Bellator MMA and the UFC.

Saying goodbye to the Hollywood Park will be certainly bring a nostalgic malaise, however Spar Star MMA memories will continue to keep you warm and fuzzy on the inside. Some great fights, some incredible knockouts, and who can forget the time Dub-C and the fellas tore the roof off the building?

Saturday will truly be a bittersweet day. The end of an era. Places like the Hollywood Park Casino have always been a refuge for the emerging fighters. They offered a haven for promotions to build the fighters, creating a consistent environment for grass roots campaigns to become professional endeavors. Places like these are certainly an endangered species.

Spar Star of course will continue. Although the goodbye is bittersweet the truth is they had somewhat out grown the venue.

Make sure you head out to the show early, the event will certainly sell out. Click here: For Tickets.  The event will also be streaming live courtesy of our friends at The Global Combat Network

The champions list(Spar Star Champions Crowned at The Hollywood Park Casino): Bellator MMA veteran Albert Morales, Farren Romero, Oneida Diaz, Paola Ramirez, Andre Nickerson, Bellator MMA veteran Marcos Bonilla, Matthew Spencer, Leo Imai, Jose Lopez, Jose Diaz, Daniel Rodriguez, Joseph Williams, Keith Carson, and Benji Gomez.

“What though strength fails? Boldness is certain to win praise. In mighty enterprises, it is enough to have had the determination” -Sextus Aurelius Propertius

Leading up to BAMMA USA event last week, 135 lbs prospect Albert Morales boldly took to social media and called out the champion when his opponent Rob Gooch fell off the card with an injury. Despite already having a fight himself, Morales saw opportunity. Although that matchup never happened the seeds had been sewn. Instead of talking his way into a title fight, Morales was going to have to earn that shot.

In his way a very tough Anthony Paredes, who trains out of  Team Quest and possesses some of the best wrestling in the division. His smothering attack can be a nightmare for a striker. Just watch his fight with Alfred Kashakian to see why. Although the fight may not have been a ‘mighty enterprise’, it would however be the ‘determination’ that crowned the victor.

Once the fight started it appeared clear that Morales was the more aggressive fighter. Moving well, and working behind his jab, Morales kept Paredes on his bicycle for most of the fight. Each time Morales would engage, Paredes would retreat. Outside of one take down, which Morales quickly transitioned into a potential armbar; the fight remained standing for 3 rounds.

Consistently moving forward, Morales found a home for his straight punches and wobbled Paredes several times with sharp two and three punch combinations, however he showed excellent maturity by remaining cautious. By doing so he never exposed his legs by getting over aggressive. Instead he maintained distance, reset, and looked to land again. Paredes did his best to fire back, but he just couldn’t keep up with Morales’s athleticism. Although the finish eluded him, Morales cruised to a unanimous decision win.

With the victory the bold 135 lb fighter moves his undefeated record to 5-0, where he finds himself in a prime position. As a top prospect he may soon get swallowed up by a larger promotion (World Series of Fighting was certainly impressed!), and if he doesn’t, at least he can now lay claim to a title shot. Before his words were just bravado, but after his last fight, can you really deny him the opportunity? His mouth may have booked the reservation, but his actions have at least earned him a seat at the table.

The sharpest of blades is forged with steel. Beaten into form. The edges razor thin, through brutal poundings and repeated tempering. Impurities at this stage can lead to catastrophic failures in battle. Fractures formed force confidence from the field of battle. A warrior who has no faith in his weapon is not an efficient warrior.

The same can be said of fighters. Although an individual sport, each fighter is shaped, molded and forged by the camp he or she trains. You may walk to the cage, the only one in gloves, but you are followed by an entourage who are equally invested in your prosperity. Simply because you are invested in them. There is a blind but beautiful loyalty to a fight team, that can only be built by repeated beatings. The camaraderie formed at the forge shapes a teams success.

Systems Training Center in Hawthorne, California is quickly becoming recognized as one of the best gyms in the Los Angeles area. Owner Marcus Kowal sat down with us to talk with us in the first of a several part series featuring some of the teams top young talent.

Spar Star MMA once again took over the Hollywood Park Casino with not only a collection of amazing fights, but SoCal’s favorite son DUB C of the West Side Connection took over at intermission, and the place exploded! Locals saluted with their hands, and the performers responded in kind, as the intimate setting proved to be a unique fusion of entertainment that complimented each other well.

The fights were also extremely entertaining. The main event featured two highly skilled amateurs who are both making names for themselves as top MMA prospects. Tigran Martirosyan and Albert Morales squared off for the vacant 145 lbs Spar Star Title.

Morales and his teammates were all working with heavy hearts as their teammate Dee Boites was killed earlier in the week, the victim of a senseless criminal. Boites was crossing the street in Inglewood, when a criminal who was being pursued by the police, barreled through a red light and struck Boites with his car in the crosswalk. Boites later succumbed to his injuries. Morales fought with “Dee” written all over his equipment, as a tribute to his fallen training partner.

The fight was a back and forth battle with both landing heavy strikes, however the story was Morales’s grappling. Martirosyan was unable to counter the slick transitions by Morales on the ground. Once Morales exposed this weakness, he seemed to focus on bringing the fight to the mat. After several attempts at a submission with the arm, Morals was able to transition to the triangle. After a roll he ended up keeping it in the mount, where he secured the head, and the tap! The win brings Morales to 2-0 as an amteur, but the caliber of his opponent will certainly elevate him in the Camo ranks.

Spar Star Promotions provides a necessary element in MMA. They provide a stage for young fighters to test their metal. Spar Star separates the wheat from the chaff, the confident from the bragard, and the fighters from the frauds. They provide the pro ranks with a talent pool to choose from that has been battle tested, and crowd approved.
