KING OF THE CAGE: VIGILANTE

by: Jonathan King  Photos by John Walsh The Clinch Report

Once again The King of The Cage promotion put on an amazing event of Mixed Martial Arts. The fight card featured 3 title fights, and a stacked under card that saw several upsets.

The Night began with an amazing .9 second knockout. King of The Cage stall-wort, and 185lbs contender Johnny Cisneros walked into a counter right hand from Joshua Aveles that immediately twisted and folded ‘The Tattooed Terror’ leaving him unconscious  and supine. The crowed was in shock, even the Aveles fans seemed stunned by the quick finish. Next for Aveles is a title shot at the 170 lbs division. As for Johnny Cisneros, its back to the drawing board. Suffering his first professional loss, was undoubtedly a rough dose of a reality for Cisneros. Fortunately though, his pedigree and skill will certainly carry him through this setback.

The first of three title fights saw Marvin Garcia vs. Justin Robbins for the vacant KOTC featherweight title. The first round featured a back and forth affair exhibiting some excellent striking and effective counters by both fighters. Garcia maintained a great pace, and stalked Robbins throughout the fight. Once on the ground, he was able to secure the victory via guillotine choke in the second round becoming the promotions strap holder in the 135lbs division.

The second title on the line belonged to David Gomez, who had been riding a 5 fight win streak coming into the fight. As the current champion Gomez had the crowd on his side, a ton of momentum, and a few defenses under his cap. His opponent Sam Liera, simply had a desire to become champion. Round 1 began with Gomez landing several hard strikes to the challenger Liera’s head, however they did little to deter the advances of the pugnacious challenger.  Halfway through the frame, Liera landed a huge left hand counter that immediately moved Gomez backwards. Showing a champions will, Gomez fought of the cage valiantly moving the scrap back to the center of the cage. His smile was replaced with a look of uncertainty, and Liera swarmed.  Shortly thereafter a counter left hand from Liera again rocked the champion as he fell to the canvas. A few unanswered hammer-fists from Liera forced referee Mike Beltran to step in to stop the fight at 4:42 of round the very first round. The winner Sam Liera is now the reigning KOTC Welterweight Title holder.

The final title bout of the evening featured KOTC Heavyweight and Super heavyweight Title holder and MMA legend Tony”Kryptonite” Lopez against a very savvy and well decorated fighter in his own right Trevor Prangley. Early on, Prangley was able to land a few heavy counter shots, that set up a few take-downs  Lopez however fought actively from the bottom, and Prangley seemed unable to provide any offense in Lopez’s guard. After two rounds of Prangley dominating with his smothering ground game, the referee began to stand up the fighters. after Prangley was unable to advance position. Here is where Lopez began to take control. Once standing, Prangley’s exhaustion was evident. Lopez landed at will, as Prangley was standing right in front of him, with very little if any head movement. In the fourth round a huge left hand from Lopez rocked Prangley, and sent him to the canvas. As Lopez moved in for the finish, and inadvertent knee seemed to hit Prangley in the head, forcing the ref to step in and halt the action. Consequent replays show the knee landed towards the neck area, and not the head. Prangley complained to ringside doctors that the knee may have broken his jaw, so the fight went to the judges score cards in the middle of the fourth round.  The judges awarded a technical decision to Trevor Prangley, who is now the KOTC Light heavyweight champion. *Interesting side note The Clinch Report’s photographer John Walsh caught the left hand that broke Prangley’s jaw proving it was not the knee that caused the damage!

Derek Brunson (10-2 MMA) WINS via Decision Chris Leben (26-9 MMA)

Recap: Derek Brunson was able to utilize his superior wrestling skills to keep the oft dangerous Chris Leben at bay for the better part of three rounds. Brunson’s smothering grappling prevented Leben from every mounting any significant offensive flurries. The grinding style served Brunson well, as Leben began to show signs of gassing in the first round.

Yushin Okami (28-7 MMA) WINS via Decision Alan Belcher (18-8 MMA)

Recap:The second time was not a charm as Alan Belcher fell to Yushin Okami much the way he did the first time. Using his tremendous grappling and size, Okami took a page from the Chael Sonnen book of MMA. For three rounds the most successful Japanese fighter in the history of the UFC  thwarted every effort Belcher made. The loss will keep Okami in contention, and move Belcher out of the very crowded title mix!

Constantinos Philippou (12-2 MMA) Tim Boetsch (16-5 MMA) v

Recap: Tim Boetsch is an absolute warrior. Even though he was injured early on, and nearly blinded by his own blood he never quit coming. Constantinos Philippou threw ever thing he had at the immobile and prone warrior, and eventually in the third round the referee saw enough.  The win catapults Philippou right into title contention alongside fellow Long Islander Chris Weidman, and a few others in the very crowded middleweight division.

Jim Miller (22-4 MMA) WINS via Decsison Joe Lauzon (22-8 MMA)

Recap: This is quite possibly the best fight of the year. Early on Jim Miller utilized an extremely  aggressive offense to land an assortment of strikes to the face of Joe Lauzon as he coiled in response to the repeated assault. In the second round Lauzon seemed to come on strong, until another flurry by Miller had him on the run and covering up. Miller fought off several late slick submission attempts by Lauzon to get the nod unanimously in a very bloody affair!

MAIN EVENT

Cain Velasquez (11-1 MMA) WINS via Decision over Junior Dos Santos (15-2 MMA)

Recap: Cain Velasquez came charging at the man who knocked him out in under a minute last time they fought. This time, the charge last five full rounds. Right from the start the champion was on his heels, as a huge right hand from Velasquez rattled Junior Dos Santos. The punch seemed to leave JDS without his wits for several rounds. Only toward the end of the fourth round did he seem to regain any sort of steam behind his punches. Cain looked tremendous, as he consistently dragged Dos Santos to the mat, wearing him down with consistent pressure, and grinding elbows.

New Champion Cain Velasquez

By Jonathan King The Clinch Report

Derek Brunson (9-2 MMA)  v Chris Leben (26-8 MMA)

Analysis: Derek Brunson was one of MMA’s brightest young stars, and still is although that star has lost some of its luster. After starting 9-0, the former Strikeforce fighter will make his UFC debut after dropping his last two fights, the first blemishes in a previously unblemished career. In his way is the ferociously reckless Chris Leben, who is returning to the Octagon for the first time since his suspension for testing positive for Oxycontin following his loss to Mark Munoz. He will certainly be looking for redemption against the younger Brunson.

Prediction: Leben via 2nd Round TKO

Alan Belcher (18-6 MMA) v Yushin Okami (27-7 MMA)

Analysis: Alan Belcher is looking to prove to the world that he is a title contender in the very crowded 185 lbs division. With many other fighters looking to claim rights to the next title shot, a win over Yushin Okami would certainly solidify his claim. Okami is a legend in MMA, and has beat a murders row of fighters with huge names! After back to back losses, that included a title shot loss to Anderson Silva, Okami returned to his winning ways with an impressive win over Buddy Roberts in his last bout. Okami is looking to keep his name in the top tier of middleweights as well.

Prediction: Belcher via Unanimous Decision

Tim Boetsch (16-4 MMA) v Constantinos Philippou (11-2 MMA)

Analysis: Tim Boetsch is coming off his most impressive win thus far in MMA, with his upset decision victory over Hector Lombard. His reward is facing another hard hitting fighter, with very much the same type of skills. Costa Philippou has racked up 4 wins in a row, and is now looking to make a name for himself off of Boetsch’s name. Both fighters have a history of going the distance, so this fight should follow suit.

Prediction: Philippou via Unanimous Decision

Jim Miller (21-4 MMA) v Joe Lauzon (22-7 MMA)

Analysis: This fight is an obvious early candidate for Fight of The Night. Lauzon is coming off his most impressive win to date, when he submitted Jaime Varner in a back and forth affair at UFC on Fox 4 in Los Angeles. Jim Miller’s career can best be described by those he has lost too. His only four losses came against Nate Diaz, Benson Henderson, Frankie Edgar, and Gray Maynard arguably 4 of the top lightweights in UFC history. Miller will need to avoid Lauzon’s submission game and keep the fight standing.

Prediction: Lauzon via 2nd Round Submission

MAIN EVENT

Cain Velasquez (10-1 MMA) v Junior Dos Santos (15-1 MMA) Current UFC Heavyweight Champion

Analysis: In there first bout Dos Santos only needed 1:04 seconds to take the title from Cain’s waist. This time Velasquez will need to avoid the heavy hands of Dos Santos and land a few of his own. Standing up either fighter can knock out the other however, Dos Santos’s boxing pedigree is the best in the business. The Champion will look to keep the fight standing, while Velasquez will certainly be trying to set up his technical wrestling in order to control the fight on the ground. Dos Santos although not seen on his back often, does possess a Noguiera brothers Black Belt, so he is no push over on the mat himself.

Prediction: Dos Santos via 2nd Round TKO

  • Benson Henderson vs. Nate Diaz – for lightweight title

Analysis: Benson Henderson utilized a complete array of weaponry on the way to a clear unanimous decision. Living up to his moniker ‘Smooth” immediately attacked the legs of Nate Diaz, at times even landing lead left hand jabs to the legs. Diaz never was able to gain any clear offense, with the exception of a few submission attempts that were never really close. Henderson landed over 130 significant strikes to only 20 for Diaz.

Winner: Benson Henderson via Unanimous Decision (50-43, 50-45, 50-45)

  • Alexander Gustafsson vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua

Analysis: Alexander Gustafsson came into the fight with a possible title shot looming, but with the immediate task of standing toe to toe with Mixed Martial Arts legend Maurico ‘Shogun’ Rua. ‘Shogun’ has made a living landing  his dynamite packed right hand. And tonight was no different, it landed often. Only this time the man on the receiving end continued to walk through them. Utilizing his clear reach and size advantage ‘The Mauler’ systematically took apart a mix martial arts legend with an arsenal of strikes rivaled only by Jon Jones. Landing at will with several powerful range-effective strikes, Gustafsson absorbed everything Rua could throw at him, and seems to be on his way to a title shot!

Winner: Gustafsson Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-26)

  • Rory MacDonald vs. B.J. Penn

Analysis: Rory MacDonald took steps to solidify his place in the welterweight division, in doing so he also vanquished a legend at least in the 170 lbs division. B.J. Penn promised a new improved aggressive B.J. Penn, and for about 1 minute it seemed he was making good on his promise. But then a liver-rattling kick, and a few elbows from MacDonald clearly erased that aggressiveness.  MacDonald shadowed the smaller Penn cutting off half of the cage. Landing at will, MacDonald nearly finished Penn with a barrage of strikes that had Penn failing a field sobriety test. Penn was able to get his feet back but was unable to finish the fight.

Winner:  Decision MacDonald Unanimous Decision (30-26, 30-26, 30-27)

  • Matt Brown vs. Mike Swick

Analysis: Matt’The Immortal’ Brown started the main card off exactly where the preliminary card ended. With a devastating knockout. Brown was able to utilize his superior wrestling to keep former contender Mike Swick off balance for the entire first-round. The veteran Swick was able to escape a very tight submission attempt only to eat a few shots at the bell. As the second round began, Swick seemed more comfortable controlling the distance with his boxing. Ducking under a pawing right hand, Brown delivered a wild I.Q changing left hand that immediately put the lights out. Two more punches as Swick fell were the exclamation point as the referee stepped in.

Winner: Matt Brown rd 2 TKO

By Jonathan King The Clinch Report

MARK HOMINICK VS. PABLO GARZA

Pablo Garza was able to withstand some vicious Mark Hominick flurries early, and was able to establish his jab frustrating Hominick into lunging assaults. Off balance Garza was able to take Hominick to the ground in the second and third rounds. Once in position continuously landed the more significant strikes, although Hominick did provide great resistance.

WinnerPABLO GARZA (29-27, 30-26, 29-28)

MARK BOCEK VS. RAFAEL dOS ANJOS

Originally set to be on the preliminary card, this fight was moved up  to replace the loss of the Nick Ring v Costantinos Philippou, bout was scrapped after Ring fell ill and was unable to pass pre-fight medical exams. Bocek stated that he would use his superior take-downs to control Dos Anjos, however the exact opposite is what occurred.  Dos Anjos systematically broke down Mark Bocek with excellent wrestling, and ground and pound. Dos Anjos never lost control of the fight cruising to a unanimous decision.

Winner: Rafael dos Anjos  via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

TOM LAWLOR VS. FRANCIS CARMONT

Francis Carmont was able to withstand a relentless grappling attack of Tom Lawlor, by utilizing effective range-establishing strikes, and excellent wrestling defense. Lawlor was able to control Carmont for most of the fight, consistently pressuring the big middleweight up against the fence. Carmont was able to survive two guillotine attempts that appeared to be locked in tight towards the end of the first and second rounds. Very close fight. When the decision was read for the hometown favorite, the crowd began to boo, obviously thinking that Lawlor had won the fight.

Winner: Francis Carmont via Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

JOHNY HENDRIKS VS. MARTIN KAMPMANN (#1 Contender spot on the line)

After a few seconds of pawing and feeling each other out, Hendriks led with a right hook that was followed immediately by his notorious left hand. Kampman was out instantly, falling backwards Hendriks followed with a vicious shot on the ground that was hardly necessary.  The entire bout lasted only .46 seconds, as Johny Hendriks cemented his position as the #1 contender in the Welterweight division.

Winner: John Hendriks via Knockout (0:46) Rd 1

GEORGES ST. PIERRE VS. CARLOS CONDIT (Welterweight Title Unification Bout)

In one of the most memorable matches in UFC history, Georges St. Pierre was able to utilize his superior wrestling skills to ground the versatile attack of Carlos Condit. Even though Condit was on his back for most of the fight, he was able to give St. Pierre all he could handle. Condit used effective striking from the bottom to soften up the champion. In the third frame Condit ducked under a hook, angled out and landed a kick to the head of the champion that sent him to the canvas. Valiantly Condit tried to finish the fight with tactical ground and pound striking, however St.Pierre was able to recover, reestablish position, and then spent the remainder of the round in control on top. The rest of the fight went pretty much the same way. George St. Pierre has now become the most dominate Welterweight Champion in UFC history. (Moving ahead of Matt Hughes in title fight victories)

Winner: Georges St. Pierre via Unanimous Decision (49-46, 50-45, 50-45)

By Jonathan King The Clinch Report

The long hard life fighters lead is extremely different from fighter to fighter. Back-rounds vary, stories differ, however one goal remains true for most fighters; and that is a contract with the UFC. Andre Fili took one more step closer to that goal last night with a unanimous decision victory over a very game Enoch Wilson at Tachi Palace Fights 15 in Lemoore California.

Utilizing his superior length Fili was able to open up the fight by frustrating Wilson with his jab. After eating a few head turning shots, Wilson was able to secure a take-down  but was unable to keep position as Fili was able to reverse into a dominant position and land strikes from Wilson’s guard.

The second round was very similar to the first, however about halfway through the frame Wilson caught Fili with a whiplash like spinning back-fist that immediately gave Wilson confidence to continue attacking on his feet. Even though he was able to close Fili’s eye with a right hook, once on the ground Fili was able to control most of the round, with the only offense from Wilson being a failed kimura attempt from bottom.

With his eye completely closed, and fight seemingly in his favor Fili could have just cruised to a majority decision. However he began the round like a fighter behind, with excellent distance striking and counter punching. Fili was even able to secure a round securing take-down late, that enabled him to sap the last of the fight from Wilson.

Winning 30-27 on all score cards Andre Fili is hoping to make his way to the UFC soon, where he would join his team Alpha Male brothers Urijah Faber, Joseph Benevides, Chad Mendes, and Danny Castillo who are already on the roster.

Fighter Analysis: At 5-10 the Sacramento native is extremely long for 145 lbs. Very range established striker, with deceptively good ground game. Strong athlete, with excellent agility. Able to establish range with both hands and feet! With 11 wins and only 1 loss that was due to a knee injury, he has the record and the pedigree to make the big stage in his very next fight. Andre Fili is a can’t miss prospect in the 145 lbs division, with an established team supporting him I would not be surprised to see him in the UFC by the middle of next year!

Analysis: Both fighters are looking to stake a claim to the next welterweight title shot with a win on Saturday. Martin Kampmann is one of the purest strikers in the division, he is able to use superior footwork to keep his opponent of balance. Johny Hendricks, may have the hardest left hand, in the weight class, with wins over Jon Fitch and Josh Koscheck, Hendricks has the pedigree, and ability to be a champion!

Tom Lawlor ImageTom Lawlor 7-4-0

Middleweight (185lbs)
Dan Miller ImageCostantinos Philippou 11-2-0
vs
Nick Ring ImageNick Ring 13-1-0
Analysis: This fight is an early candidate for fight of the night! Both fighters have established themselves as grinders, having won most of there fights by decision. Ring possesses a great all around game, with excellent wrestling and submissions skills. Philippou has improved with every fight since his loss to Nick Catone by decision. A member of the Serra/Longo fight team, Phillipou is also no stranger to the submission game, although his strength is striking.
Prediction: Nick Ring via decision
Featherweight (145lbs)
Pablo Garza ImagePablo Garza 11-3-0
vs
Mark Hominick ImageMark Hominick 20-11-0
In wrestling one of the most popular matches is the “Loser Leaves Town” scenario. Although wrestling is fake, this scenario is very real for both of these fighters. Both are coming off of losses, and are on the verge of being cut from the ever expanding UFC roster. Hominick was once considered one of the best in the division. A student of the late great Sean Tompkins, Hominick possesses excellent striking skills, and a pretty solid all around game. Pablo Garza started his career in the UFC impressively winning both of his first two fights. Since then he has dropped two connective fights to Dennis Bermudez and Dustin Poirer. Garza’s back is against the wall,
Prediction: Hominick via 2nd rd TKO
UFC Welterweight Championship

Georges St. Pierre ImageGeorges St. Pierre 22-2-0
vs
Carlos Condit ImageCarlos Condit 28-5-0
Coming off almost a 600 day layoff from his last fight finally GSP is back in the mix. One of the best pound for pound fighters GSP possesses one of the most well rounded games in all of MMA. He can stand and bang, wrestle, box, and he can put you to sleep! One of the most dominate champions in all of Combat sports, GSP is running from a knee injury headlong into a waiting Carlos Condit. His win over Nick Diaz proved Carlos Condit is a legitimate Champion. His Muay Thai, and kick boxing is vicious. And he has been training non stop for this fight, since before GSP had surgery! Both fighters are healthy, and in prime condition. This should be a great fight!
Prediction: Georges St Pierre via decision
