To be great at anything one must spend quite a bit of time practicing. The strategy is simple, and yet extremely difficult. The “10,000” hour rule according to Malcolm Gladwell is the key to being great. In order for anyone, to be great in any field, they must simply perform that task for 10,000 hours.

Well over 10,000 hours ago Michael Chandler began walking this path in Missouri as a high school wrestler. Even now years later, this desire is still what fuels him. For many the title is the goal, to become a champion. What makes Chandler different is that he doesn’t measure himself by the gold around his waist,

For Michael Chandler, its about another page, another chapter, each one consisting of another 10,000 hours of discipline. For Michael Chandler its not about who you fight for, but how you do it, that defines greatness. Its about a consistent effort that rewards not only himself, but everything he represents.

This ‘blue-collar’, humble, work ethic, and wholesome attitude is as genuine as the ass-whooping he dishes out, so don’t be fooled. Michael Chandler is a fighter first, and as a champion, he plans on becoming one of the best ever!

Young fighters usually bring a desire and hunger that usually provides for exciting fights, if the match making is legitimate. However on the regional scene the big names are the draws. Often these names are in the twilight of their fighting career. Last night, we saw the start of some very promising careers, and we watched the end of two very prolific ones.

Gabe Ruediger has fought on the biggest stage in the world. As a former WEC and UFC veteran, Ruediger achieved the loftiest of a mixed martial artists aspirations. Now fighting for the last time, Ruediger was not only dealing with the retirement butterflies, but the man he was facing knocked him out last time they fought. Scott Catlin, himself no spring chicken also announced after the fight that he too was calling it a career. Both fighters had their moments, Catlin early and often, but in the end its was Ruediger’s submission game that secured the swan song victory!

Also on the card was the first ever BAMMA USA light weight title fight. E.J. Chavez landing some very heavy strikes, and avoided a very slick submission game to secure the first ever promotional title. The three round fight saw Chavez on top for pretty much the whole fight, but Jorge Valdez proved to be quite slick on his back, often working for several submissions. However Chavez proved to be too tough, and eventually ended the fight via TKO in round number 3.

The headline bout featured well known fighter Ronald Lebreton jr. against Mikey Gomez. Lebreton came out aggressive immediately taking control of Gomez, and grinding him against the cage. Counter the aggression Gomez was able to secure a take down, and once on the ground he was able to transfer to side control. From a strange angle Gomez secured Lebreton’s arm and rolled it into an arm-bar, forcing the tap early into the first round.

Regional promotions in southern California are not rare these days. Each day it seems a new one is popping up in casinos around the state. Often times, the fight cards only feature one or two competitive bouts, with the rest serving as ‘tomato cans’ to pad a fighters career stats. BAMMA USA however, subscribes to a different method of thinking.

Each fight, including the preliminary bouts featured well matched opponents that led to extremely exciting fights. BAMMA USA offers the casual fight fan, and the die hard a unique experience that will lead to more growth in the sport of MMA.

Commerce Casino served as the home venue for BadBeat 9 which was co-headlined by the first ever lightweight title fight

Bjorn Rebney bellator Owner and CEO

Bjorn Rebney bellator Owner and CEO

By Jonathan M King The Clinch Report

Last week Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney came out and said that talks between the company and the former champion had broken down, and seemed less than hopeful that a resolution would be made. In fact the Bellator Chairman seemed content to allow the courts to settle the issue.

“I had hope a month ago there was a door opening,” Rebney said. “But that door isn’t open at this point. So I don’t know. The court system is slow and methodical, and we’re just going through the process. I don’t have any projections of it getting settled at this point because we’re not talking”, Rebney said.

“The essence of it is, the promoter is never going to get everything he wants and the fighter is never going to get everything he wants. We have a position that we did everything right legally, and the court has supported us. I thought we were headed down a road (to resolution), and then everything went real dark.” (From an interview with http://www.MMAJUNKIE.com)

Yesterday, Eddie Alvarez used twitter to rattle of a few of his contentions. First of all he claimed that the issue was more with Viacom and SpikeTv, and went further to claim that Bjorn had little to do with the situation at all. “Bjorns a Grunt in this . It’s Viacom and Spike and a group of idiots a money who don’t know shit about Mma” Alvarez tweeted.

Then Alvarez went further, claiming he is not the only fighter being mistreated. “I have nothing to complain about I get paid we’ll enough to keep bills paid but to bully guyslike @ZachFunSize(Zach Macovsky) n @CosmoAlexandre (Cosmo Alexandre)is a sin.” Alvarez tweeted.

Alexandre jokingly tweeted about spending his last four dollars and gas, with the hashtag “ThanksBjorn”. Alvarez is not in that dire of straights, but he is in the prime of his career, and should be fighting. No one can say for sure how this drama will unfold, but as for now one of the best fighters in the world is relegated to the shelf, at least for the foreseeable future.

Eddie Alvarez will be n the MMA HOUR with Ariel Helwani on Monday. However saty tuned to his twitter feed, because he teased that he might not be able to wait! “I might just dump just real shit tonight until I get a call from someone to stop. Soooo much to talk about, now that the gloves are off” Alvarez tweeted.

Champions are made, they are not born. It takes years of work, unyielding dedication, daily sacrifices, and even a little luck to get to the top of the mountain. In the world of MMA, that mountain is made up of the souls you’ve defeated. Each victory brings with it a target, which beams brighter and looms larger, with each win.

There is a “Ying and Yang”, to be recognized in a sport early on in your career. Pedigree can open doors for you and exposure can add zeroes to paychecks, however the learning curve is steep and unforgiving. For every Peyton Manning, there is a Ryan Leaf.

So although those doors may be unlocked with your name, your performance ultimately is what keeps the doors open. For some this ‘target’ can be an uncomfortable burden, for others it can be their ultimate motivation. For Chris Honeycutt (1-0 MMA), the latter is true! “I’m used to having a target on my back!”, Honeycutt said. “That target on my back is a positive thing, it means I am doing the right thing!”

For many this ‘target’ carries with it extraordinary pressure to perform. Often times the anxiety to perform stifles the performance. This is not the case with Honeycutt. “If you don’t feel pressure you are not doing something right!” the affable young fighter said. “It motivates me, I don’t plan on being average, I plan on being the best.” Honeycutt said.

To ensure his success Honeycutt has surrounded himself with a top notch team of advisers, managers and trainers. Training primarily in Fresno CA, the east coast native has found a home at Dethrone Base Camp where he trains with owner and MMA legend Josh Koscheck (Fellow Edinboro College Alumni). Now training full-time under the watchful eye of John Salter and ‘Kos’ Honeycutt focuses on every aspect of the game.

Methodically he began to transition from the power wrestler, into a well rounded and disciplined martial artist. As rapid as his growth has been, each day at the gym serves as a reminder that there is still much to learn. “I have a hard time keeping up with these guys!” Honeycutt said. “It’s not easy working with Lavar(Johnson), Koscheck and Salter, but each week I’m getting more fluid, and more confident.” Honeycutt said.

When his future calls, Honeycutt will rely on the wisdom of his team. “DeWayne Zinkin and Bob Cook have been in business a long time, they guide my path.” Honeycutt said. For now, “It’s my job to get better and to train hard.”

Last year Honeycutt made his successful debut with the UPC Unlimited Promotion winning with impressively with his trademark ground and pound. With the win and a few more months on training under his belt, for Honeycutt the skies the limit!

His next fight will be May 11th in Fresno CA at the Sierra Athletic Club (For tickets http://upcunlimited.vbotickets.com/event/upc_15/3032) for the UPC UNLIMITED Promotion, and will also be featured on there June card at the Agua Caliente Casino.

This weekend the UFC will put forth a pay per view caliber fight card, that will be featured for free on FOX. Not only will the lightweight title be on the line, but Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier will make his long anticipated debut in the UFC.

Jordan Mein  vs. Matt Brown

The resurgent Matt Brown has proved that if a fighter wants to stay in the UFC he has to improve once he has arrived. Brown is in the midst of a 4 fight win streak, and is looking to solidify his chances for a possible contender slot. Mein is looking for his second UFC win after defeating the always game Dan Miller by TKO in his last outing. Mein should be technically proficient in the striking department, but Brown is notorious for his tenacity. Prediction: Brown via Split Decision

Nate Diaz  vs. Josh Thomson

Nate Diaz is one of the most talented fighters in the UFC. His boxing skill is unrivaled in the division, and even if you can put him on his back, his submission skills are just as refined. However, in his last performance Benson Henderson completely dismantled the Stockton native, beating him at his own game. Josh Thompson is no stranger to the Cesar Gracie team, having faced Gilbert Melendez 3 times already. Thompson is a hell of an athlete, who even at 34 years old is still extremely dangerous in the division. Prediction: Diaz via Unanimous Decision

Daniel Cormier  vs. Frank Mir

Frank Mir is and has been a top ranked heavyweight for nearly 10 years. As a former champion, he has the skill to end the fight in any position with either a strike, or a submission. He also does not like being considered a stepping stone (see Brock Lesnar first fight)! Daniel Cormier is the best wrestler in the division which alone presents problems, but Cormier can also turn out the lights with his heavy hands. Mir could very well grab a hold of a limb during a take down, but this fight might not ever make it there. Predictions Cormier via TKO RD 2

Benson Henderson* vs Gilbert Melendez 5 Round 155 lbs Title Fight (*Champion)

Finally, ‘El Nino’ Gilbert Melendez will be making his octagon debut, and he does so in an immediate title fight. Coming in as the Strikeforce champion Melendez for a long time has been considered one of the to 3 lightweight fighters in the world. His durable style suits either the quick knockout, or the five round battle. He sets up his powerful hands with excellent feigns, and has great take down skills as well. Benson Henderson is one of the biggest lightweight fighters around. The champions power begins with his tree trunk like legs, that power one of the most athletic frames in all of MMA. As a striker Henderson has great power, and even better timing, often beginning and ending combinations with balance shattering leg kicks. Once Henderson achieves top position, he is nearly impossible to sweep. Make sure you use the bathroom before the fight begins! Prediction: Henderson via Split Decision (Fight of the Night)

UFC On FUEL TV

Preliminary Bout on Facebook that you MUST SEE

Ryan LaFlare  vs. Ben Alloway:

Look for Ryan LaFlare to make a very explosive debut against Ben Alloway. LaFlare is very explosive, and should be able to win in electric fashion.

Winner: LaFlare via TKO rd 3

The Main Card:

Robert Peralta vs. Akira Corassani:

Peralta is the favorite going in, but Corassani is fighting at home in Sweden. Is that going to be enough to carry the upset? Yes it will. Winner: Corassani via Decision

Diego Brandao vs. Pablo Garza:

Brandao is on the rise, and Garza has his back against the wall already. If he looses, he will probably find the cut list. Can his time at American Top Team counter Brandao’s vicious aggression? Probably not.

Winner: Brandao via TKO rd 2

Matt Mitrione vs. Phil de Fries:

Both ‘Meathead’ Mitrione and Phil de Fries are on the outside looking in, towards the elite of the division. Mitrione has better hands, but de Fries is better all around. Good match up.

Winner: de Fries via 2nd rd Submission  (*Because of the odds good bet to place!)

Mike Easton vs. Brad Pickett:

Whatever you do, don’t blink! Both fighters have a history of ending fights with heavy strikes, although Pickett should have the better boxing, so if he can avoid the take downs, he should be able to land heavy and often!

Winner: Pickett via TKO rd 1

Ross Pearson vs. Ryan Couture:

‘The Real Deal’ Pearson has very heavy hands, but his ground game is his kryptonite. Couture has the ground game to expose this weakness.

Winner: Couture via Split Decision

MAIN EVENT

Mousasi v Latifi *(Late replacement for Alexander Gustafsson who was unfit to compete due to a laceration.)

At one time Mousasi was one of the top 3 light heavyweights in the world, and probably still should be. In his way a very strong, but relatively unknown Ilir Latifi (training partner of Gustafsson). Mousasi is the obvious favorite, but the match-up could prove to be troubling. Latifi is a strong bulldog, and will certainly be looking to bring the fight to the mat. Can the hometown boy shock the world of MMA, he can…..but he won’t!

Winner: Mousasi via TKO rd 2

Olympic gold medalist and feel good story Henry Cejudo continued his ascent into the MMA world by winning his second professional fight in very impressive fashion. At 125 lbs his wrestling is already at the top of the division (in any promotion), but as you will see in the video it was his striking that was on display early.

Cejudo utilized his superior athleticism to counter his opponents long range, with effective movement and foot work. Often moving in and out of striking range, to delivery punches.

Then of course there was the take downs. Every time Cejudo was able to secure a leg, the fight went to the ground. Once there, Cejudo did well to avoid getting caught in any submissions. He will need to work on his guard position though, as he seemed more comfortable in half guard, very much like other wrestlers such as Randy Couture.

UFC 154 GSP Rush Walkout Tshirt Navy

After a late take down, Cejudo was able to land some heavy ground strikes that put his opponent on dream street. After a few academic shots, because the referee was late to stop the action, Cejudo’s hand once again was raised.

This performance solidifies Cejudo as a legitimate threat in the 125 lbs division. Now 2-0 as a professional his pedigree in MMA seems to be familiar. Like many of the wrestling legends before, Cejudo’s future with a big promotion seems to be only a few Gladiator Challenge wins away!

TUF 17 - Wear What the Fighters Wear

Anybody in this world has the right to be whatever, or whoever they want to be. Transgender people deserve the respect that everyone in life is entitled too. As Rogan states, “In violent competition” Physical structure matters. Although Fallon Fox is technically a female, now, her male attribute have not disappeared. Her frame is still that of a man, and that could give her a huge advantage!

“When it comes to  competitive athletics , thats when you have to draw the line!” No fighter should ever have an unfair advantage over another. Male or Female.

According to some the earth was created in 7 days. If it was, that would be a pretty productive week for a god. For a mixed martial artist 7 days after a fight usually finds them healing, re-charging or simply put; in lazy mode. For Bellator heavyweight Josh Appelt (10-2 MMA), 7 days is all that separates two very impressive wins in the Bellator Cage.

Shop the Official UFC Store

Appelt is currently riding a 6 fight win streak that has seen him rise in the heavyweight rankings from virtual unknown, to possible Bellator Tournament contender.

On February 28, Appelt’s impressive TKO win over Josh Lanier (7-7 MMA) left him virtually unscathed. When the opportunity to fight Manny Lara on short notice arose, Appelt gamely stepped up to answer the call. Although he was taking the fight on short notice, ‘The Juggernaut’ felt ready.”I knew he was tough (Lara), after watching his fight with Martinez, but I was confident.” Appelt said.

Although this fight did not end as quickly, it definitely solidified Appelt’s status in the burgeoning Bellator Heavyweight division. For three rounds, Appelt dominated the heavy handed Lara, on his way to a unanimous decision victory. Utilizing his superior wrestling, Appelt was able to keep Lara pinned on one hip where his vicious ground strikes scored heavily on the judges scorecard.

Lara at times did land some heavy shots, but ‘The Juggernaut”  continued his relentless assault.  “I didnt feel rocked at all really, only when i took the knee did i feel hurt at all.” Appelt said “But that guy does has heavy hands!”

For Appelt, the key to the dominant performance was his superior grappling.  “He (Lara) told me he was surprised by my wrestling ability… he didnt realize I had been a wrestler, he though I was just a striker, but i actually like the ground!” Appelt said.

The win over Lara puts Appelt (3-0 in Bellator) in a interesting free agent situation, as it was the last fight on his contract. However, if he has his way he won’t be going anywhere. “I like Bellator, and am hoping to get in the tournament.” Appelt said. However the two battles in 7 days have left the ‘Juggernaut’ with some minor wounds that need to heal up first.

For Bellator, Appelt seems to be the perfect fit. If you were to cut a fighter from the Bellator cloth it would be hard to find a better representative than Appelt. “I like the Bellator tournament format, it tests a fighter not just physically but mentally, you have to try and stay healthy, and not get hurt!”  Appelt said. Unfortunately for the eager Appelt, in the Bellator tournament the fights are more spread out than 7 days!

Hopefully his recent success will enable the former collegiate football player to become a full time fighter, however his family obligations and full time equipment operator on a gold dredge fuel his hunger to succeed in the Bellator cage. “I’m a dad first, and always will be.” Appelt said. But the glare of gold outside of his sluice box and around his waste is clearly obvious. “I’ll fight whoever, wherever, whenever!” Appelt said. “But then, we can hang out afterwards!”

Josh Appelt: “I want to thank my son Braden and my wife Amanda. Tyson, Mikey, and Jeremy my coaches and my manager Dave Hirschbein of MMA Gold.”
