Bronson Casarez is a young tough kid, with lofty aspirations. Following in his teammate Joshua Aveles’s (Current KOTC 170lbs and 160lbs Champion) footsteps, the Team Diamond product entered his last fight at Hollywood Fight Night 8 as a last minute replacement. He emerged a prospect, with a ton of attention. In that fight, Casarez outpointed 135lbs stalwart Dmitry Gerasimov in a very close fight. The win bolstered the young fathers confidence and moved him onto a short list of players in his division.

Casarez is now set to take on his toughest opponent to date in Jared Papazian. Papazian a former UFC veteran is coming off a big win in his last fight over Ara Muradyan and is looking to make the jump back to the UFC with an impressive win over a hungry young opponent. Don’t let the experience differential fool you, the fight should be a classic brawl, as neither fighter has the ‘backup’ in their vocabulary!

Also appearing on the card in support of the main event in a co-feature Muay Thai specialist Casey Greene takes a very tough Mario Delgado. Coming off a huge win in his last bout over Derrion Chapman, Richard Leroy is set to return to the Lightsout Ring against submission specialist David Fabian who is making his pro debut.

The preliminary card is also filled with local talent, featuring some excellent match-ups. Systems Training Center Eric Rios is looking to rebound from his first loss against another fighter,  Levon Sargsyan who is in the exact same position. Fighting out of Glendale Fighting Club, Sargsyan is also searching for his first win as a pro. Both fighters have explosive hands, and the matchup is an early favorite for fight of the night.

Featured on the preliminary card are some highly touted local prospects such as HarQore HQ’s/10thPlanet/The Yard product Matthew Spencer, Glendale’s Alfred Kashakyan, Systems Training Center’s Jared Carlsten, and of course Muay Thai Legend Jemyma Betrian who is looking for her second win as a mixed martial artist in as many bouts.

Betrian is perhaps the best prospect currently not in the UFC strawweight division. Although only 1-0 as a mixed martial artist, Betrian’s striking pedigree makes her one of the most dangerous women in the world at her weight. This may very well be the last time to catch her fight outside of the UFC.

If you have never been to a Lights Out Promotions/Bash Boxing card you are certainly in for a treat. The unique blend of combat offers a taste of ever discipline to even the most elite of combat fans. The unique atmosphere, beautiful woman, and celebrity attendees add to an always explosive card. I guess you could say Matthew Spencer has been reborn in every sense of the word. Spiritually and Physically it would be difficult to find a more legitimate role model. Spencer works several full time jobs to support his family and still has time to train religiously! Not only physically, but spiritually as well. Spencer is an active member in his church and often provides spiritual counsel to younger fighters.

As an amateur, Spencer had become somewhat recognized as a pedigreed fighter with a well rounded skill set. After all, he trains with some of the best in their respected disciplines. Most fighters in the sport of mixed martial arts prefer to find a home. A one stop shop for all their training needs. Super camps like American Top Team in Coconut Creek Florida, or American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose California, and even Jackson’s MMA in Arizona provide this ‘all in one’ fight camp that  resonates with some of the best fighters in the world. Like those fighters, Spencer receives the same training, in mixed disciplines. However unlike most, Spencer calls three gyms home. ‘The Yard‘ Muay Thai, ‘Tapout‘ Los Angeles, and Eddie Bravo’s ‘10th Planet Jiu Jitsu‘ can claim a piece of Spencer, as he represents sort of a three headed monster created by all 3 labs.

That Franken-Fighter, assembled from parts strewn around LA, made his pro debut at Hollywood Fight Night 8 presented by Lights Out Promotions and Bash Boxing, and all went according to plan. His opponent Gabe Lopez proved to be pretty tough, powering out of a deep arm bar, before Suplexing Spencer on his head. Spencer held on to a guillotine choke that in hind sight he probably should have let go! Even still Spencer quickly recovered without ever sacrificing position, and eventually he was able to secure  the rear naked choke at the end of the first round.Lopez fought off several attempts, but once the forearm was under his chin he was forced  to tap.

The win, his first may have been expected. However the journey to the destination has been full of road blocks. Life presents several challenges in everyday life. Spencer is no different in this regard. How he handles these issues, however is what separates this man from the rest. His approach to fighting and to life remain the same. His faith is his armor, and his family his heart. His allegiances may be between three different teams, but that loyalty is stronger than most fighter who call one place home. He may be late to the dance, in terms of age, however after all he has overcome to get where he currently is, with the faith he has, I wouldn’t bet against him!

Bash Boxing and Lights Out Promotions put on one hell of a show last night at Hollywood Fight Night 8. The event took place at the Florentine Gardens on Hollywood Blvd. Keeping with the spirit of Halloween several of the gorgeous ring card girls were dawning scantily clad costumes that at times made it difficult to watch the fights. After all, with a perfect ten dressed as a she devil, attentions tend to shift and quickly! In between the madness there were some pretty entertaining fights.

Several of the fighters were making their professional debuts. Although not well known names, these fellas gave all they had in the ring. On the boxing side of the card, Urmat Ryskeldiev (9-3-1) probably had the most impressive outing. Utilizing his superior speed, Ryskeldiev finished his opponent journeyman Bernardo Guereca (17-22-1) with a liver rattling shot on a level change. Once the referee surveyed the damage, the count wasn’t continued. Also winning via corner stoppage was Stanyslav Skorokhod (8-0). Skorokhod used his range to pick apart David Lopez (4-11-3) who proved to be too tough for his own good. After absorbing some heavy punishment the corner informed the inspector to “throw in the towel”, Now undefeated after 8 bouts a step up in competition is needed.

Former title contender Avtandil Khurtsidze (29-2-2) returned to form by systematically destroying perennial thorn Eddie Hunter in their 162 lbs bout. Khurtsidze led a charge throughout the fight behind his forehead, which caused many butts throughout the fight. Hunter early on gave as well as he received but eventually his combinations fell off, and instead looked for the home run shot that never came. Khurtsidze hammered the body of Hunter relentlessly and after it became apparent their was little he could do to swing the fight in his favor, the corner threw in the towel, giving Khurtsidze the TKO win.

The MMA portion of the card featured several of Southern California’s favorite sons including Derion Chapman, Richard Leroy, Thor Skancke, Daniel Clark, Dmitry Gerasimov, Bronson Casarez, Christian Bizaretty, Adel Al Tamimi, Gabriel Lopez, and Matthew Spencer.

Christian Bizaretty withstood an early attack from Adel Al Tamimi to earn a late first round TKO. Bizaretty once on the ground controlled Al Tamimi and reined down elbows from the mount prompting the stoppage from referee John McCarthy.

The same can be said of Tapout LA’s Matthew Spencer. His opponent Gabriel Lopez was able to suplex Spencer in WWF fashion, dropping him on the back of his head. However once the slam was completed, Spencer quickly recovered a hook, and immediately took the back. Lopez fought of a few armbar attempts, and a late choke, but eventually Spencer’s forearm slipped under the chin and his only choice was to tap or to sleep, he chose the earlier.

Bronson Casarez fighting out of Diamond MMA in Upland CA, on 5 days noticed outworked a very game Dmitry Gerasimov in what we thought was the best fight of the evening. Both fighters kept a furious pace, and threw defense to the wind in a classic brawl. When the score cards were read Casarez was declared the winner, however one score card read 30-27 giving Casarez every round. If you watched the fight there is no way this is possible. The guy who won probably should have, however I scored the bout the other way.

Even Ray Charles would have saw the third frame for Gerasimov. Once again the question is raised. What fight was that judge watching? The controversy despite its ridiculous judgement cannot shadow an amazing performance from a young fighter who has a bright future ahead of him. Casarez now 5-1 as a pro is back on track after a long layoff. Gerasimov’s stock also rises. Once again his reputation of putting on entertaining fights will continue to keep him relevant. Eventually a decision has to go his way.

House of Champions Derion Chapman, and Sityodtong LA’s Richard Leroy engaged in a heated bout that had the crowd on their feet the entire time.  Early on Chapman’s speed seem to give the much larger Leroy difficulty. Utilizing his jab, Chapman peppered Leroy blackening his eye, and causing a leak early. Leroy stayed patient and started to land some nasty dirty boxing late in the first round. In the second frame the power differential became more obvious as Leroy rocked Chapman several times. Once Leroy was able to ground Chapman’s lighting attack, he was able to secure a choke late in the 3rd round to ensure the win. Chapman whose size may see him down a weight class in the future, will certainly be heard from again.

Crowd favorite Thor Skancke took on a very tough Daniel Clark in the co-main event of the evening. Normally extremely aggressive, Skancke seemed hesitant early and that opened the door for Clark, who secured it shut with some vicious punches. The win brings Clark’s record as a pro to the left side of .500 at 3-2. The impressive first round stoppage over a well known fighter will raise Clark’s stock dramatically, while Skancke will have to return to the gym to continue to refine his craft.

Lights Out Promotions in association with Bash Boxing is proud to present another night of mixed discipline warfare on October 30th at the Florentine Gardens. The event will showcase a combination of boxing and mixed martial arts fights. The “Fight Night” series always delivers a great night of action, and this Halloween eve will be no different!

Thor Skancke  vs. Daniel Clarke

Eric Winston  vs. Dmitry Gerasimov

Richard Leroy  vs. Derion Chapman

Marcos Bonilla vs. Adel Al Tamimi

Cooper Gibson  vs. Jay Bogan

Skancke, is coming off a huge win at “Chaos At The Casino 5” where he defeated Matt Hagge via impressive KO in the third round of their back and forth war. Known throughout Southern California for his aggressive style, Skancke will be looking to build off the victory to create a winning streak. In  his way is jujitsu ace Daniel Clark. Clark is looking to build off his last performance, a win over Bobby Sanchez, however it has been over a year since he has fought according to Sherdog.com. If so, he will have to battle the “ring rust” as well.

Also featured on the MMA portion of the card is Systems Training Center’s Dmitry Gerasimov.  Besides his formerly fantastic beard, Gerasimov is perhaps best known for his epic battle against Chinzo Machida at RFA 15. The fight saw Gerasimov attacking the heavily favored Machida the entire fight. Although he came up short via decision the bout was a highlight real of exchanges as both fighters showcased their superb striking skills. Gerasimov will be taking on a very tough Eric Winston who went the distance against BAMMA USA champion Terrion Ware, although he came up short in the decision.

Popular 145 lbs local Marcos Bonilla will be looking for his first win as a pro as he faces off with Kyokyshin karate expert Adel Altamimi, Richard Leroy will be looking for his 2nd win as a pro when he squares off with Derion Chapman. Manny Gamburyan is set to take on Cody Gibson at UFC 178. This time he will be competing in a new weight class. Gamburyan will be dropping for the first time to 135 lbs, and is hoping the new neighborhood will be his permanent home.

Gamburyan has fought at 170, 155, and 145 lbs as a pro, very often fighting much larger opponents. The new division will mark his 4th as a mixed martial artist. Now working with nutritionist guru Mike Dolce, Gamburyan is confident he can maintain his energy at the new weight and is looking to make a run at a title.

‘The Anvil’  is also the consummate teammate. He is constantly helping other fighters prepare for their bouts and will be at Chaos At The Casino 5 on August 10th to support his teammates Marina Shafir, Jemyma Betrian, Varden Sholinian, and Alfred Kashakyan. All of whom will all be competing on one of the most stacked fight cards of the year.

UFC 178 is only a few months away and although everyone is talking about Jones v Cormier, Gamburyan v Gibson is a fight that cannot be missed!

August 10th Hollywood Park Casino

August 10th Hollywood Park Casino

Lights Out Promotions returns to The Hollywood Park Casino on Aug 10th. Headlining this stacked card is a very interesting matchup between two fighters with very different backgrounds, however they both share one goal. Both want to fight on the big stage, and whenever graduation is on the line you can expect a good fight.

Dominic Clark (6-3 MMA) vs. Karim Ghazi (11-6 MMA) is an intriguing match up. Ghazi, formerly known as Chris Saunders, is a ‘TUF’ alumnus with both UFC and Bellator MMA fights on his resume. After a loss to Sevak Magakian, Ghazi rebounded with a 3rd round submission over Dominic Gutierrez at ‘Chaos At The Casino 4’. Consecutive wins would certainly put Ghazi back on the UFC’s radar.

Clark  is aware of that and of several things, he understands coming off a loss that he needs a good performance. The UFC will not even look at a fighter with two consecutive losses, especially in the stacked 155 lbs division. Clark is also aware of his opponents pedigree. In his way is a very well rounded and dangerous fighter. A tactician who has tasted the big show, and is scratching and clawing his way back.

Fighting out of PKG in Los Angeles, Clark enters the main event as the underdog. With the way his last fight ended, its hard to imagine why he would take a step up in competition instead of taking a tune up fight. However Clark is an opportunist. He is not fighting for the sake of fighting. He has a goal. Like many others Clark wants to fight in the UFC, and you don’t get the UFC brass’s attention by fighting tomato cans.

Excuses are abundant. In life, and in the sport of MMA they roll off the tongue freely. Performances are often blamed on nutrition or, horrible judges renderings. Dominic Clark makes no excuses for his performance in his last fight. He was winning the fight, dictating the pace, and implementing his gameplan. Then his opponent hit a homerun.

The loss although heartbreaking, changed very little about Clark. “My past four fights I showed up to every one. In the last one I was putting the fight where I wanted, and he got me with a ninja type Machida-esque kick.” Clark said “I am really looking forward to showing a loss is a loss, and we move forward now we always stay aware.”

As for this opponent, Clark  seems to have a pretty decent scouting report prepared.

“He was on the Ultimate Fighter, and had a great run in the house.” Clark said. “He beat Sam Sicilia, put up a great fight against Vinc Pichel and ran into a very tough Myles Jury.” An impressive resume to say the least, however Clark is still confident. “I’m just really excited for the opportunity, especially with the buzz a promotion like Lights Out generates.” Clark said.

Fighting as the main event usually carries a heavy burden. Clark will be fighting in front of his hometown fans, and in a fight that certainly has career implications.  A win over Ghazi, may not be enough to get him in the UFC, but it will certainly open some eyes.

With both fighters making concerted efforts to move on, this is a fight you will not want to miss.

Jemyma ‘The Golden Girl’ Betrian is one of the most dynamic strikers alive. As a kickboxer she is known the world around for her career changing liver kicks, and her lightning fast hands.

When you talk to her, its hard to imagine such a sweet effervescent spark plug, transforming into a killing machine. However, that is exactly what happens when the cage door is closes.

Jemyma refers to it as “WarMode”. Although the war analogy is overplayed in our sport, there is not really a better way to describe the sheer violence she unleashes when the bell rings. Her liver kicks can cause cirrhosis, and her hand speed is blurry, even when played in slow motion. Simply put she is the most dangerous striker alive in any division of women’s MMA.

She is already only a few fights away from the UFC.

Betrian will debut on August 10th at Lights Out Promotions ‘Chaos At The Casino 5’ which begins at 6:30 Sharp. The event will stream live on the internet. But if you can get to The Hollywood Park Casino, this is an event you won’t want to miss!
